Blackhawks vs Golden Knights: Shootout Drama and Star Performances (2025)

Heartbreak for Blackhawks fans! Despite a dazzling performance, the Chicago Blackhawks fell to the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 in a shootout. It was a game of incredible highs and frustrating lows, leaving fans wondering what could have been. But here's where it gets controversial... was this loss a sign of progress, or just another missed opportunity? Let's dive into the key moments and standout players from this rollercoaster of a game.

Unfortunately, the Blackhawks found themselves in a familiar, and unwelcome, position early on. Just 27 seconds into the game, a pass attempt took an unlucky deflection off defenseman Wyatt Kaiser's skate and ended up in the back of their own net. Talk about a rough start! But showing resilience, the Blackhawks responded almost immediately, tying the game just 56 seconds later. After those initial fireworks, though, the scoring dried up for a while. Vegas went a full 7 minutes and 43 seconds to close out the first period without registering a single shot on goal. That's some serious defensive lockdown!

Then came a moment of pure comedy and opportunity. A truly bizarre decision by Vegas goaltender Carter Hart to venture out and play the puck turned into a golden scoring chance for Tyler Bertuzzi, who capitalized with a well-deserved goal. For a brief, glorious moment, it felt like justice had been served – "puck don't lie," as they say! But that feeling was short-lived. Ben Hutton managed to bank a shot in off Blackhawks defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, tying the game once again. Frustratingly, both of Vegas's goals had come off of Blackhawks' own players. After 40 minutes of play, the score was deadlocked at 2-2.

Heading into the third period, the tension was palpable. It felt like the next goal would be crucial, and the Blackhawks delivered, scoring less than five minutes into the period in spectacular fashion. This put them ahead, but a really good Vegas team kept pressing and were able to tie the game with just 2 minutes and 28 seconds left in regulation. And so, because of course, we went to overtime!

The overtime period was nothing short of a goaltending clinic! Both netminders put on a show, making save after save to keep their teams alive. It was truly a display of skill and athleticism.

Here are the Three Stars of the game:

Star 1: Connor Bedard

Connor Bedard was electric all night. From the opening faceoff, his speed was a constant threat, and he relentlessly battled for pucks and scoring opportunities. He even showed some defensive prowess, as highlighted by BlackhawksFocus. And then, in the third period, he scored a goal that gave the Blackhawks the lead. I mean… c’mon. Really?!? What can't this kid do?

But it didn't stop there! His shootout goal? Absolutely SICK! It was a thing of beauty, showcasing his incredible skill and composure under pressure.

Star 2: Tyler Bertuzzi

Tyler Bertuzzi also deserves major recognition. He earned the primary assist on the Blackhawks' first goal of the night, setting up the play with a beautiful pass. His effort on his own goal was equally impressive. When Hart made that ill-advised decision to play the puck, Bertuzzi was alert enough to make sure he checked up on the line before attacking the turnover. Vegas challenged the call, but the goal stood!

Star 3: Spencer Knight

Spencer Knight was a rock in net for the Golden Knights. The two goals he allowed weren't really his fault – both were the result of unfortunate deflections off his own teammates. Those goals shouldn't overshadow what was otherwise a very strong performance against a talented Blackhawks team. He made several incredible saves throughout the game, including one on a Mark Stone breakaway in overtime. He was really tested tonight and was up to the task.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ilya Mikheyev had a quietly dominant performance. He drew a penalty on a shorthanded scoring chance in the second period. At the end of 40 minutes, Mikheyev and Jason Dickinson had an expected Goals Against of 0.0 at 5-on-5. Zero. Point. Zero. While Mikheyev was on the ice at 5-on-5 in the first two periods (8:54), the Blackhawks had a 5-1 shots on goal advantage and 11-3 shot attempt advantage. This shows how effective he was at limiting the Golden Knight's offensive opportunities while creating chances for his own team.
  • Jason Dickinson was a force in the faceoff circle. In the first period, he won 4 of 5 faceoffs. By the end of 40 minutes, he was 8-for-11. Unfortunately, he took Artyom Levshunov's stick to the eye with a little more than six minutes left in regulation and had to leave the game briefly for assistance. Thankfully, he was able to return before the end of regulation. His faceoff wins were crucial in gaining possession for the Blackhawks.
  • Artyom Levshunov had a strong defensive showing. He broke up several scoring chances at critical moments, demonstrating his poise and awareness on the ice.
  • Oliver Moore scored the first goal of the game and came out flying. He had another good shot attempt in the first period that just missed the net. His speed and energy were noticeable throughout the game.

  • Frank Nazar recorded the second assist on Moore's goal, extending his assist streak to seven of his last nine games. He also excelled in the faceoff circle, winning four of eight in the first two periods, and led the team with three scoring chances through 40 minutes. He even drew a penalty in the middle of the third period on a scoring chance. Nazar's playmaking ability and offensive instincts were on full display.
  • Alex Vlasic unleashed his offensive side. After two periods, he led the Blackhawks with seven shot attempts, tied for the team lead (with Nazar) with three scoring chances, and had one of the Blackhawks' five high-danger chances. This suggests he was taking risks and creating opportunities in the offensive zone.
  • Despite the early goal against, the Blackhawks played a really good first period. Through 20 minutes, they had a 15-11 shot attempt advantage and a 6-3 advantage in scoring chances at 5-on-5. This shows that they were able to shake off the early adversity and control the play for much of the period.
  • The Blackhawks' power play struggled mightily, going 0-2 with just one shot on net in the first period. That one shot was a powerful blast from Bedard that was barely stopped. Their third power play, which started after 19 seconds of 4-on-4 after the Blackhawks killed a penalty, was equally ineffective. The fourth was cut short by a Blackhawks penalty. The Blackhawks' fifth power play in the third period saw more shorthanded chances for Vegas than power play attempts. It was a night to forget for both units, highlighting the need for improvement on special teams.
  • Mitch Marner didn't register a shot attempt until three minutes into the second period. This suggests he was having a difficult time finding space and creating opportunities against the Golden Knights' defense.
  • Kaiser redeemed himself with a couple of huge shot blocks on Vegas's first power play in the second period. These blocks were crucial in preventing Vegas from extending their lead.

  • Outside of the unfortunate deflection off him, Grelzcyk had a solid night defensively. He was reliable in his own zone and made smart decisions with the puck.

So, what do you think? Was this loss a sign of progress for the Blackhawks, or simply another frustrating defeat? Did the right players get named the Three Stars? And what needs to change for the power play to become more effective? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
