The Philadelphia Eagles delivered a dominant performance, shutting down Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions' offense, securing a hard-fought 16-9 victory on Sunday Night Football.
Philadelphia's defense was the star of the show, effectively neutralizing the Lions' offensive capabilities. Detroit struggled mightily, converting a mere 3 out of 13 third-down attempts and failing on all 5 fourth-down tries. This inability to sustain drives proved costly.
Quarterback Jared Goff had a night to forget, completing only 14 of 37 passes for 255 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. His completion rate of 38% was the lowest of his career, even worse than his 43.8% completion rate in a loss to the Patriots during his rookie year with the Rams. This marked a significant drop in performance.
But here's where it gets controversial... The last time Goff had a completion rate below 50% was back in 2018 with Los Angeles. Coincidentally, the Eagles' current defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, was then the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, who also held Goff to a poor performance. This suggests a pattern of struggles against Fangio's defensive strategies.
On a windy night in Philadelphia, the Eagles' scoring came from Jake Elliott's field goals of 27, 34, and 49 yards, and a touchdown by Jalen Hurts, who pushed the ball into the end zone late in the second quarter. The Lions' only moment of brilliance came in the second quarter, with Jameson Williams scoring on a 40-yard catch-and-run play. However, a celebration penalty by Williams led to a missed extra point, costing Detroit valuable points.
And this is the part most people miss... Even with the Lions' offense struggling, Eagles' head coach Nick Sirianni made a bold call, opting for a 'tush push' on a fourth-and-1 from their own 29-yard line with 3:00 left in the game. With the starting center injured, Hurts was stopped, resulting in a turnover on downs. Detroit then narrowed the score to 16-9 with a 54-yard field goal. A questionable defensive pass interference call on Rock Ya-Sin then gifted the Eagles a crucial first down, allowing them to run out the clock and secure the win.
On the ground, Barkley gained 83 yards on 26 carries. Brown led the team in receiving with 7 catches for 49 yards. For the Lions, Jahmyr Gibbs had 39 yards on 12 carries, and Williams had 4 catches for 88 yards and a touchdown.
Now at 8-2, the Eagles lead the NFC. The Lions, at 6-4, will host the Giants next Sunday.
