Elina Svitolina is off to a roaring start in 2026, capturing her 19th career title at the ASB Classic! This victory marks a triumphant beginning to the season, showcasing her resilience and determination.
Svitolina, entering the tournament as the top seed, demonstrated her dominance by defeating Wang Xinyu in straight sets. The match, lasting 1 hour and 42 minutes, saw Svitolina's strategic gameplay and unwavering focus.
But what makes this win even more impressive? Svitolina's record in WTA Tour finals is now an astounding 19-4, translating to a winning percentage just shy of 83%. This statistic underscores her ability to perform under pressure and secure crucial victories.
After a challenging 2025 season that concluded with four consecutive losses and an injury, Svitolina used the off-season to regroup. She turned that losing streak into a five-match winning streak to kick off 2026. She defeated former Top 30 player Katie Boulter in the second round and Iva Jovic in the semifinals.
"It definitely feels amazing to win another title, especially after a not very pleasant end of the year for me," Svitolina shared in her on-court interview. "But that break really helped me to regroup and come back with a new energy and I'm very happy that I got the title here."
The win is projected to elevate Svitolina to No. 12 in the PIF WTA Rankings, inching her closer to a Top 10 return. The 250 points she earned in Auckland could prove invaluable as she prepares to defend quarterfinal points at the Australian Open later this month.
Svitolina's performance against Wang was particularly impressive on serve. She saved all four break points and won 74% of her first-serve points. She broke Wang for a 4-2 lead in the opening set and closed it out in just over half an hour.
Wang Xinyu, despite the loss, leaves Auckland with a significant rankings boost, rising to No. 43 from No. 57.
