Nigeria's Power Revolution: Why States MUST Invest in Electricity! (2025)

It's time for states to step up and take control of their power supply! The recent push by Minister Adebayo Adelabu for state governments to address the energy crisis is a much-needed wake-up call. It's shocking that some states need a nudge to provide such a basic necessity.

For years, the idea of decentralizing power has been ignored. The old NEPA, now PHCN, held a tight grip on power generation, distribution, and transmission. Despite its unbundling, the power situation remained dire, with only a meager 6,000 to 7,000 megawatts available for the entire country.

But here's where it gets controversial: on March 17, 2023, a constitutional amendment was signed, giving states the power to license, generate, and distribute electricity. This was further solidified by President Tinubu's signing of the amended Electricity Act on June 9, 2023. This move towards de-monopolization is a recognition that Nigeria's vast population demands a more collaborative approach to energy management.

And this is the part most people miss: only a handful of states have taken steps towards utilizing this newfound freedom. Abia, Enugu, Ondo, Ekiti, Imo, Oyo, Edo, Kogi, Lagos, Niger, and Plateau are leading the way, but that's less than a third of all states!

This response is incredibly disappointing, especially considering the technical and financial challenges involved. The power sector demands expertise and dedication, which many states lack. However, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) can provide the necessary support to willing states, helping them get started.

State governors must break free from the lazy dependency syndrome that has plagued our nation's development. They should embrace the gradual devolution of powers from the federal government and use this opportunity to address Nigeria's underdevelopment.

Providing electricity should be a priority for states, right alongside roads, water, education, and healthcare. States should not only ensure a stable power supply but also offer subsidies to support small businesses and create employment opportunities. This approach will not only boost the economy but also contribute to tackling security issues.

We envision a future where various power mini-grids thrive across the country - hydro, gas, solar, turbine, and more. Decentralization will reduce the impact of national grid failures and ensure that the entire nation doesn't suffer when such incidents occur.

Citizens, it's time to hold your governors accountable. Demand that they take action and provide the electricity you deserve. Let's work together to build a brighter, more empowered Nigeria!
